Oregon/Nevada Cutthroat Trip

Date:

Notes:

Just Got home from our trip to the Oregon/Nevada deserts chasing Cutts. What a GREAT trip! Started out on the Whitehorse Ranch catching Willow/Whitehorse Basin Cutts. We caught quite a few fish and with good size up to 16 inches! I did lose a bet with the girlfriend as she caught the biggest Whitehorse Cutt on her first cast! It cost me one shiny nickel.

We then headed over to Guano Creek for the Alvords camping out near the corrals. What a beautiful valley!! I loved that little creek. FULL of fish. On the way over we did stop in Fields for gas and of course had dinner in the cafe. If you are ever in Fields make sure to stop in and eat there. The cheeseburger and shake are the BEST!

Last stop was Gance Creek north of Elko for the Humboldts. We stopped down low on the creek just above the ranch and searched for and fished any openings in the willows and brush. When we could get a fly on the water we would catch a fish. If I had more time I would have liked to explore farther up the creek for more open water and not so brush choked as down lower. Maybe next time I'll try the North Fork of the Humboldt. All the fish we caught on Gance were little guys but they sure are pretty!

One question - did you secure permission from the Ranch at Whitehorse or drive around to the creek from the Willow Creek (Hotsprings) side?

I called ahead and made a reservation for the dates we were there. The manager told me that they only allow one group of fishermen access at a time so Dawn and I were they ONLY ones fishing the creek. We had the whole thing to ourselves!!!! We camped at the Sweeney Cabin (not in, too many pack rats) for $25 a day.

Nicely done! Whitehorse looks

Nicely done! Whitehorse looks pretty much like Willow. Anybody else on Guano? Did it look like anyone else had been there recently? Any idea on the ratio of Alvord phenotype?

It looked to me like not many people had been there before us and nobody else was there when we fished it. The road in had not seen much traffic. Both Dawn and I noticed and agreed on that. We caught quite a few fish between us (I always quit counting after one) and I would say over 50% had that nice red lateral line. The spotting varied widely. I will have to go back through the pictures and refresh my memory. I did take a picture of one fish that was very striking due to the vivid red lateral line.
