Fall Trip 2009 Part 4 Utah's Bonneville Cutthroat

Date:
September 17, 2009
Notes:

We had done way to much driving and far too little fishing so it was time to stop and fish for a few days. I had met Scott (Cutthroat Stalker) through this forum and he had the remedy for what ailed us, Logan river. The highway followed the water for miles and there seemed like one beautiful run after another. We found a quiet campsite next to the river and setup what would be base camp for the next 3 days. On Saturday Robert (Soul Stream) was hosting a gathering  dubbed "Hoppertunity" which we were looking forward to attending but that was two days away. That gave us plenty of time to explore the waters nearby. Talking to Scott prior to hitting the water was a big help. He really emphasised to fish the pocket water and just in front of big rocks. Even with those tips it always surprised me when my dry fly would be slurrped down just before it drifted into a protruding boulder. I even had one fish roll onto the top face of the rock as it overshot my fly. Saturday came and Dan and I met up with Scott and Robert on the Logan. Robert had tied up some experimental hopper patterns he wanted us to try so we split up into two groups of two and hit the river. We flogged the water with those hoppers for half an hour before my fishing partner, Scott, said it must not be a hopper day and switched to an Elk Hair Caddis. Almost immediately he was into a fish so off came my hopper in favour of a Royal Wulff. Scott managed to out fish me atleast 6 to 1 that day even though I knew he was giving me the best water. It was a pleasure watching him fish and I learned a lot that day. Thanks again Scott and Robert. We will not soon forget our days in Utah.

Scott may spend his weekdays teaching grade 6 but this Saturday I was the one being schooled.
