I think most fly fisherman would generally agree that the reason the remaining naturally reproducing native trout species have been relegated in their native ranges to only the most remote headwaters and out of the way streams is due to...

I hesitate to describe this as a post about "ultralight" backpacking and fly fishing as some of the true ultralight backpacking guys really take it to the next level--and make a lot of sacrifices to get there. Those guys will look at my kit and load weights and chuckle. Nevertheless, I believe that there are a lot of folks that backpack primarily to fly fish and that are also...

So I had a couple of hours to kill today and decided that my time would be best spent harassing cutthroat on the Puget Sound. So I grabbed my 6 wt spooled up with one of the new wulff Ambush lines and head out to the beach. All that I can say this that the Ambush is a game changer for how I fish the saltwater. This line will relatively easily toss a single hand spey style cast 60 to 70 feet...

While I haven't bee fishing in 80 days, I have been able to maintain sanity by reading. My last day on the water in 2009 was in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I'm sure I will spend more time there in 2010, as it is the closest "real" trout water to my current location.

I saw this book advertised on the Little River Outfitters web site, so I placed an order from the author's...

Plain and simple the last few weeks in Western Washington have been down right nasty. Since the beginning of the new year the pineapple express has moved in and we have had far more rain than we know what to do with. In fact certain areas of the Olympic Peninsula received in excess of 15" of rain just over the one week period between the 10th and 16th. As would be expected this has put a...

Little Bear Bank
The temperature inversions in our valley have one positive affect: some incredible hoar frost (radiation frost) builds up. As I wait for ice and joints to thaw, and fish to move, I walk the valley....

Here are five more angling artists for your optic pleasure.

Derek DeYoung’s Canvasfish.com bills itself as “art for the avid angler.” His artwork is stylized using a bold palette with much of the work being close-ups of fish. I didn’t notice any people or landscapes in his work, just fish. He has originals, prints, decals, notecards, etc. for sale. The originals are pricey (...

Come show your support for those fighting against the proposed Pebble Mine by coming to a showing of Red Gold at the Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor. The Pebble Mine is proposed in the last great strong hold of native rainbows, dollies, arctic char and Pacific salmon in the Bristol Bay region of AK. If this project goes the we would be risking losing the strongest runs of Pacific salmon left on...

For those of you concerned about the impact of hatchery released fish into native fish habitat in California, the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) released their Environmental Impact Report (EIR) / Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on January 11. It’s a weighty tome consisting of over 25 PDF files. The reason for the EIR/EIS is because of a lawsuit filed by the...
