Other native fish?
I know that everyone here is in pursuit of native trout, but I was wondering if there was anyone else out there interested in pursuing other native fish, like the bass? I'd really like to complete the native bass slam in my life, I think it would be sweet to do it in a year. There are currently 8 species of black bass (1 being newly named last year) with 1 species having 2 distinct sub-species.
- Kentucky or Spotted Bass
- Shoal Bass
- Suwannee Bass
- Shoal Bass
- Smallmouth Bass
- Guadalupe Bass
- Alabama Bass (new, it was previously considered a sub-species of the spotted bass)
- Largemouth Bass - Northern strain and Florida strain
If there is interest, is there a possibility of adding the black basses to the fish list? I won't get my feelings hurt if anyone objects. I would love to fish for native trout more often, but it's just not in the cards. Native trout are still on my list (with those in the SW being on my immediate radar, fingers crossed), but since I've been living in Louisiana I've developed quite a fondness for the black bass.
Interested to hear your thoughts.

I like it
Great idea. I've been worried about Gary ever since he caught the Paiute Cutt and didn't have any more western trout to dream about.
Seriously, I'd be happy to add these to the site. I've always thought of it as a way to encourage conservation of native fish, wherever and whatever they are. My dream would be to add many more species than this.
The problem is that I don't have the time or the knowledge right now to do it right now. If you'd be willing to be the bass editor, I'll make it happen. Assuming of course it is OK with everybody else.
To do it, you'd need to make range maps in google maps. It's not very difficult once you get the hang of it--go to Google maps and click 'my maps'. Once you've done that, and written up a short description in the same format as the trout, I could import them.
But let's make sure nobody else objects first.
I like it! I've already
I like it! I've already caught both largemouth and smallmouth on my 2wt.
I recently transferred to the Cincinnati metro area, I'll actually reside in northern Kentucky. I expect to chase more warmwater species (to feed my addiction) - I even picked up a 5wt bamboo (my first rod > 4wt).

Anders, I wouldn't mind
Anders, I wouldn't mind helping you out at all. In fact, it would help motivate me to do more research. Species like the guadalupe, suwannee, and shoal would probably appreciate the extra attention.
I actually forgot about one
I actually forgot about one species in my first post, the redeye bass, so there are actually 9. I don't know how I left them out, they are one of the most beautiful.
Hey Fishtaco You had my
Hey Fishtaco
You had my wheels spinning for native bass in California, and with a little research I found out we have none..... The only thing close is the Sacramento Pearch. So now I will be targeting those this spring. I have caught them before, but it has been many years.
Thanks
Frank
Great
Let me know when you have maps and descriptions put together and I will set it up. Do you have pics of all of these?
Not of all of them
I only have pics of 4 of the species. I could ask some friends for permission to reproduce their images however to round out the rest if necessary.
OK
Just get what you can. I bet we can find more online without too much sweat.
And thanks for doing it.
I've finished the maps and
I've finished the maps and descriptions, what's your email address Anders? I've got a few photos I can send along as well.
I'll send you an email
