New Guy
Hello,
I guess I'm the new guy. Doing some research brought me to this site and I really liked what I saw so here I am. I was born and raised in Wyoming and have been fishing it ever since. I am now on the quest to catch all the sub species of Cutthroat and am willing to SHARE information with those willing to do the same.
Scott

Welcome
Hi Scott,
Welcome to a great site. I don't post very often, but I will check in quite frequently as there are many very knowledgable folks here who share lots of great information. I found my here the same way you did; researching native trout. I share your desire to catch and photograph all the different Cutthroat subspecies. I will be heading out your way from CA this summer in an attempt to accomplish the Cuttslam. For your goal, you will want to add the Paiute, which is native to the Silver King Creek drainage in Alpine County, CA. It's only about an hour and a half from my home. There is little chance of catching one there, though, as the occupied stretches are closed to fishing. Several years ago, one could fish the pools directly below the closed sections and try to cherry-pick one that had gone over the falls, which were both the natural barrier to the hybrids as well as the demarcation for the open section of legally fishable water. In the last couple of years, CDFG closed another half mile or so of creek. One of the CDFG biologists put in 32 hours of fly fishing "creel survey" time on the newly established legal sections of Silver Creek and said out of the hundreds of fish hooked, not a one was a Paiute or even a hybrid. It is possible that the stream is reestablished with Paiute in the near future. I believe F&G are getting the reports and paperwork together for another shot at rehabiliting the creek and have increased the take limit on the open stretches of the creek for the 2010 regulations. I'm rambling now, but basically, if you want the Paiute within a year or two, there are some non-native streams that they have been established in that are legal to fish. I can help you with information on those if you so wish. There are several on this site who have photos of the Paiutes they have caught in such waters. There are also folks here who caught Paiutes in Silver King Creek before the most recent closures. I'm sure they can all add more info than I know. Good luck in the quest and feel free to inquire about any other California native trout. I have a long way to go on the Cutthroat list. I do have the Coastal, Lahontan (stream and lake forms), Willow/Whitehorse, Bonneville, Yellowstone, and a very hybridized Alvord.
Take it easy, Scott (my name too)

Welcome to the site. I (as do several others on here) have the same personal goal - some have already completed it.
Good luck,
Chris
Thanks for the welcome! I
Thanks for the welcome!
I would love to talk more about the Paiute. This Cutt is going to be the most difficult to add to my list and coming all the way from Wyoming I want to make sure that I get to the right stream to have a chance at a Paiute. These guys are on my list for 2011 as 2010 is full chasing others. If you need any info about Wyoming let me know.

Welcome to the site! I had the same goal until this past summer when I managed to finally get a Paiute, although not native where I got them they were still just as challenge seeing as it was one of the most brutal hikes that I have done in pursuit of native trout. So if you want info on the Paiute, just let me know I will be more than happy to help.
paiute
Hey Gigharbor,
I would love to learn more about the Paiutes. What would be the best way to contact you and talk?

SKC
Funny you should mention SKC. I was talking to a DFG fellow at the Fly Fishing Show and he was telling me folks were still catching Paiute in the open section of SKC. Told me a story of a fellow camped there for days, caught 200 fish and one Paiute. Also told me a similar story of a guy who spent days there and had one roll on his fly and he missed it. :)
I heard the same thing too Jim
The current open section is very close to where I caught mine some 15 years ago although it is closed water now. Sounds like a chance to get it on a CHTC certificate. I have heard Bull Lake in Alpine County also contains pure Paiutes through some contacts as well as reading about them in the Sierra Trout Guide Index. I never fished it, but hiked right by it when exploring on the same trip in 1994. I recall it being a much easier hike through Noble Canyon than the hike Gary did to get his Paitue as I have done that one as well.
SK Creek
I got my one and only Paiute a year and a half ago in the legal section of SK Creek, but I hiked down there three times before I got one. It's all in where you fish in the legal section. I'm not going to say any more (in public, at least). LOTS of other hybrid trout, but only one pure Paiute after a lot of fishing.
In my efforts to get one in the past, I backpacked into Bull Lake and caught some nice sized trout that looked like hybrids: Lahontans with sparse spotting. I spent a mostly sleepless night at Bull Lake, as there was a very large and aggressive bear that showed almost NO fear of humans, and noisily menaced my campsite all night. He ripped open the backpack of a woman from another couple that was camped there as well. Good fishing, but no Paiutes and nasty bruins, not a good combination.

Anyone ever been to
Sharktooth? Hopefully people don't feel the name is too sensitive to post about (it is on wikipedia after all http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paiute_cutthroat_trout), but I've been curious about this place for a long time. I saw a picture of it once in a fisheries report and it looked like a nice little creek. I think it is most likely a two day walk to get to but it is also in a beautiful part of the Sierra...
Never Been there
Know of no one who been there either. Looked at it on the map before.
Speaking of Silver King Creek...
There is an article this morning in the Sacramento Bee about CFG's decision regarding what they plan to do with SKC, perhaps as soon as this summer. Check it out: http://www.sacbee.com/2010/03/22/2625584/poison-picked-for-eliminating.html
CFG
How does CFG restock after poisoning the stream? Do they have hatchery Paiutes or do they just hope the natives will take care of it?
Restock from other creeks
They are going to "restock the Project area with putative pure Paiute cutthroat trout from donor streams in the upper Silver King Creek Watershed (i.e., Fly Valley Creek, Four Mile Canyon Creek, Silver King Creek, or possibly Coyote Valley Creek)."
This from the final EIS.
