I am so glad Anders started this site!

You can thank Edward Morris on this site for pointing ME in the right direction. You may also want to send Doug Nielsen of the Nevada DOW for providing the resource. He also likes stream reports and you can contact him at dnielsen@ndow.org.

Chris

Thanks!

This site is a great resource for people looking to find native trout. I just got back from a trip looking for Little Kern goldens but was unsuccessful. Turns out the head waters are pretty much fish free this time of year, maybe all year.  I'll have to try farther south sometime.  I emailed Doug about the stream being diverted down the road and someone mentioning a boy scout troop was stocking brown trout in the stream. Maybe they call the lahontans brown trout.  I hope they don't put browns in there hopefully it's too alkaline for other species besides lahontans.

Thanks again Chris

Davin,

Would you be willing to give me details about the streams you fished? I'm headed to vegas in mid October and would love to add the lahontans to my list.

Thanks,

Todd

Vegas

Hey Todd,

As far as I know there is only one stream.  It flows through Carpenter Canyon to the west of Pahrump.  Search for Carpenter canyon road, NV on google maps and follow it west until the road ends.  The road is really rough, we put a hole in the exhaust of my friends impala.  I would defiantly have 4wd next time with some clearance.  Once you get to the parking lot there are about 4 fishable pools.  I got one off a royal wulff and 3 off nymphs.  I think anything would work.  There is very little fishing pressure but, during the summer at least, a lot of hikers.  Its about 20 degrees cooler up there at 7500'compared to Vegas.  The drive to the dirt road is about 45 minutes and the 14 or so miles on the dirt will take at least 90 minutes.  Check out these blog entries the second one is mine.  I got my info from Chris, who went out there a month before me.

Good luck!

Let me know if you need anymore info

Cheers

Davin

Thanks for the additional info. Especially about the need for a 4x4. Headed there in 2 weeks. I'll let you know how I do. Really excited. When you're ready to knock Greenback and Rio Grande cutthroat off your list, let me know. I can point you in the right direction.

update

I never posted an update, when I was there the water was very, very low, despite there being a thunderstorm overhead. Due to the weather, the storm was right on top of me, I was unable to safely fish the creek. However the only fish I saw, in the stream were very small- 3" to 5" range, and I only saw 2 or 3 of them. When I was there the 4 lower fishable pools had only a couple inches of water and no fish in them. I'm afraid this population may have taken a big hit.
