CHT - NorCal - Part Three

From July, 2004 - Part Three

Back in the truck and heading south.  We could go down to the Tahoe area and try for some Lahontan Cutts, or we could give Eagle Lake a try…Not really the best time of year for fishing Eagle Lake, but that’s what we decided to do.  We stopped at a few shops and talked with some locals…dunking worms was what we were told would be our best chance – and one small shop proprietor said “without a boat?  No chance, no way…”

Well, we set up camp – knowing that we did have at least a chance, but knowing that October and November were the better times to catch a fish from Eagle Lake.  We were determined not to “resort to bait”, so the kids and Ken took out their spinning rods and tied on small gold and silver lures, but I was resolute to give flycasting a try.  We headed out to a rocky point and started fishing.  A whole lot of casting and retrieving lures and flies, and things weren’t looking so great…but we were thinking that the early morning would be a better time any way…

“Hey, I got one” yelled Simon from down the shore…

Sure enough, he landed a nice 18 inch Eagle Lake Rainbow, his fourth native trout of the trip, and his sixth, to complete the challenge…

What a happy kid!

What a great weekend…
